Balumama was born in 1892, in a village called Akkol in Chikkodi taluka of Belgaum district in Karnataka. His father's name was Mayappa and his mother was Satyavva.

He spent his childhood with his parents but was always lost in meditation and was a quiet boy. He later went on to live with his sister and married her daughter against his will.

The marriage did not last long. He was given about 15 sheep by his in-laws which he started to tend.
Balumama was the disciple of Shri Mulye Maharaj of Gargoti in Maharastra. Shri Mule Maharaj temple is in Gargoti (Kolhapur district), and was a saint in the last century. He is also said to be the incarnation of Shri Halsidhha Nath.

Balumama died at the age of 74 in 1966 in a village called Admapur in the Kolhapur district of Maharashtra.
A temple was built in his memory in Adamapur which is near Nipani in Karnataka and Kolhapur in Maharashtra.
The Temple is looked after by the “Shri Balumama Trust”. The sheep numbers have now grown to about 40,000, which are looked after by the temple trust.

Shri Balumama spent most of his time at Margudevi temple, which is located (within walkable distance) near the main temple. When I visited this place I felt great peace.
